The upcoming holiday is always a special one for me as my grandfather, Harold Windham served over 20 years in the USAF. He was a tail gunner, flying in B-17s and B-24s during World War II. He always said (half jokingly), "The best feeling a man can have is being shot at, and missed". After his service in the military, he was able to come back home to Davis Station, SC and be "Daddy" to my mom and her three brothers. Eventually he became "PaPa" to his grandchildren. For the first 25 years of my life, I was lucky enough to have him in it, long after his years of military duty had ended.
Memorial Day is about honoring the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Every year, I'm reminded of how deeply grateful I am for their courage and humbled by their dedication to securing our most cherished freedoms.
While we enjoy the long weekend, I invite you to take a moment to honor our fallen heroes and extend our thoughts and support to their families when possible.
